The First & Original Peranakan Restaurant in Jakarta

Can anyone guess which restaurant has the right to claim that title? For senior culinary enthusiasts in Jakarta, I have faith that you are familiar with Kedai Tiga Nyonya. This restaurant started serving since 2003 and now being almost one decade old, it is probably losing its luster in the hubbub of newer, fancier, similar-themed restaurants springing up in every corners of the city. However, I had the privilege to visit this historical site and witness for myself the charm of the first and original Peranakan restaurant in Jakarta.
Kedai Tiga Nyonya tempo doeloe (in the old days)
Kedai Tiga Nyonya is located on one of Jakarta's busiest stretch next to Sarinah building, that is legendary for the array of culinary offerings. The restaurant is set in an old colonial-style house as you can see from the photos. Everything inside is authentic vintage ornaments steeped in Oriental and Malay influences, hence the hybrid culture, Peranakan. Even the music playing in the background is probably those played in our parents' younger days. I couldn't help but to giggle at the playful lyrics in the songs. =D

Just like your mum's cooking the dishes here are guaranteed MSG free and 100% Halal (despite the Oriental influence). As the food is cooked on order, it took slightly longer time to wait. But we didn't mind at all, because sitting inside here felt so relaxing, the time could have actually stopped. If you wish to spend quality time over good Peranakan cuisine, minus the distraction or noise that you usually have to endure inside other restaurants (especially those inside shopping malls), then Kedai Tiga Nyonya is perfect.

Tommy fell in love with the signature dish of Kedai Tiga Nyonya: Ayam Siyao (slow-simmered & fried chicken marinated in special soy sauce). He actually finished the half-chicken almost entirely alone (I only took a small piece). The Nasi Kuning (savoury coconut yellow rice) and the Brokoli Cah Bawang Putih (stir-fried broccoli with garlic sauce) made a perfect combo for tummy-filling lunch.

I actually saved the space in my tummy for the dessert: Pisang Bakar Keju. But was rather disappointed because the banana fritter was dry, not succulent like I had expected. =( The cheese-shavings on top of the banana was overly generous. It was probably the first time in my life that I almost felt sick from eating cheese!

Alas, Kedai Tiga Nyonya is an unpretentious Peranakan restaurant with authentic ambiance and it has made a mark in Tommy's heart, for sure we hope to come back in the future and maybe he will bring his non-local friends here too.

  1. Sepertinya Kedai 3 Nyonya bukan 'the first & original peranakan rest' di Jakarta deh. :)

  2. Thank you buat koreksinya Jenny =)
