There's a reason why some people just can't move on and that's exactly the memory I had about this place, especially if they serve dishes like this...

It was my first time visiting The Container Grill, Bar & Restaurant in Gading Serpong, Tangerang (a satellite town of Jakarta, some 28km away from where I live). Actually, if measured by distance, it's not that far, but it's the traffic jam that we have to sit through, to access the toll road, which intimidates traffic jam-phobics me. Nonetheless, as a ‘hipster foodie’, I'm always on the lookout for non-mainstream places, out-of-the-way, hidden gems like this.
As the centre of business, lifestyle and entertainment, Jakarta has anything one could possibly imagine under the sun, but as we move further outskirts, finding a decent meal could prove to be challenging, let alone a decent place to have proper steak and grill. In Gading Serpong, a thriving suburban town, there's actually a true, proper steak & grill place that's not a franchise from imported brands: The Container Grill, Bar & Resto. Managed by Dwiputra Group (its sister brands include Cuppa Coffee, Mister Baso, Rice Bowl, Ce Wei, etc), TCG is located on the second floor of its sister restaurant, Ce Wei.

As the name suggests, the restaurant uses real (massive shipping) containers as private rooms for the guests. Fitted with air conditioning and windows, they actually make cosy rooms that remind me of innovative and minimalistic container houses, I often saw on TV or internet. The cosy and relaxed ambiance, outdoor sofa tables overlooking the bustling Gading Serpong central roundabout, makes it an ideal and favourite hangout spot among the younger crowd.

The menu is all about comfort food, dominated with fried and grilled, meaty, cheesy and bread-based stuffs. And since their motto is "We have what you want", don't be surprised to find some classic Asian and soupy dishes next to the steak menu. In that case, there’s no excuse that your parents or grand-parents cannot eat here, because they can't eat steak. Just order the Sop Iga or Ayam Goreng Tulang Lunak for them, problem solved right? =P
I only have praises for the food here, I'm sure it was not pure luck. the place won't still be around if they hadn't been consistent in their service, taste & quality all these years. Here are some of the food we tried the other day for lunch:

I helped myself to one of the new dishes at TCG: the chicken steak topped with scrambled egg with molten mozarella cheese, comes served with fries and slaw on the side. Looks tempting huh? And it tasted even better!

Tornados – tenderloin wrapped in bacon, topped with sunny side up egg, served with mashed potatoes, mix vegetables and black pepper / mushroom sauce. This is my absolute recommendation, at you get a little bit of everything, steak, bacon, egg and veggies, just perfect!

Both of the steak we tried were crazy tender and cooked perfectly. I was purring contentedly all the way through the meal! If you feel like on a carbo-loading escapade, the food here is worth all the sins and guilt =P

If there’s any regret about TCG, is that it’s location requires some extra effort to reach. But given the choice, I would still choose TCG over other similar restaurants, because you get the same (if not better) taste and quality for more reasonable price. =What d'you reckon?
