#HipsterTravels: Blue Doors Coffee, Bandung

I have a tendency to deviate from the norm, and I'm not quite sure why. Either I was wired with 'rebellious' cord in my 'processor', or I'm simply addicted to the short-lived bliss of sticking out from the crowd. That is why I self-proclaimed myself as a 'hipster foodie', someone who is supposed to go out of her way to discover non-mainstream places. Well to be honest, it has not been easy, I have had my fair share of succumbing into the 'norm' and end up blending in with the crowd. I hate myself when I'm doing things that I dislike or I often found myself at a loss of what to write about places that I visited on invitation. When that happens, the other, sarcastic part of me, would jeer and condescendingly mock my greed for accepting too many invitations at a time. I'm a hipster foodie, not a review / restaurant invitation hunter, so. I've been reminding myself.

You probably wonder why I would start my blog ranting about seemingly unrelated topic with the place that I'm about to share. Well, to be honest, I have tons of pending posts, and most of them from invitations / events. I could easily transform some of them into a blog, but most of the time, I kept postponing the rest of them, simply because I have no idea of what to write about. Blogging is supposed to be fun, but where's the fun for me now?

So for this post, I'm going to share with you, about one of the new waves of hipster cafes in Bandung, West Java. Escape from the throng of eateries in Bandung that mostly sell frivolous concepts, but hardly any substance in their products (ie: food and drinks), even if it's just for a quick drop by. Actually, I visited Blue Doors quite sometime ago, but I still decide to post about it anyway, because I really think this place is worth the detour when you're in this city. If not for the cup of well-crafted joe, come here to enjoy the no frills food and beverage.

Since the cafe is attached to a bigger showroom / gallery next to it, the rather narrow front part of the cafe disguises a bigger (non-smoking) area inside. I like the little things they do to the place to make it feel somewhat raw, quirky, playful, casual, but at the same time gravely serious about their coffee.

Other than coffee-based beverage, there are also juice, tea and other interesting drinks. Whereas for the food, they served pastries off the counter display (acquired from the suppliers), but you can also order some brunch (made in-house) off the a la carte menu.

At the time of my visit, I ordered the basic stuff for myself (a cup of piccolo and a plain croissant), whereas my coffee date, Shierly of urbanouteaters.com, who joined me quite later on, had the Croque Sandwich. Intrigued by the Magic Brulee Capp, I helped myself to a second cup of joe. It's like drinking coffee flavoured creme brulee, but not that extreme. The cappuccino was tasty and the top foam, sprinkled with sugar, was torched to caramelize like creme brulee.

Oh, what I love even more about this place, is the prices on the menu are nett (at the time of my visit). I hope they stay so until forever! Haha, but seriously, Even (if) with taxes and so on, the prices here are more than affordable than other similar 'hipster' joints. Wanna give this place a shot?
