Omakase Lunch by Akira Watanabe @AW Kitchen

If you frequent the shopping malls in Central Jakarta as much as I do, you would've known that AW Kitchen opened its second restaurant in Jakarta back in December last year.

Like AW Kitchen in Plaza Senayan, the one in Plaza Indonesia feels a bit more spacious and seems to be brighter. In any case, you can expect to find similar signature interior elements.

This February, Celebrity Chef Akira Watanabe was in town for a few days, for the Grand Opening event. And it also happened to be the first time I visited the second restaurant, meeting Chef Akira in person and also trying out an omakase lunch prepped by the Celebrity Chef himself.

1st course: Amuse-Bouche - Beet-root Expresso Soup that's mildly flavoured and lightly sweet.

2nd course: Antipasto Freddo - Chu-toro tuna & red snapper carpaccio
One of AW Kitchen's signature dishes is the carpaccio and they always plate it so beautifully. Of the several times I've dined here, and their carpaccio is always very light and delicately flavoured, but the wasabi mayo was there too, for those who likes a jolt of strong flavour.

3rd course: Primi Pasta - Hokkaido crab with ikasumi (squid ink) spaghettini tomato sauce

The tomato sauce, as you can see, is made from fresh tomato and the hokkaido crab's tasted sweet combined with the mildly savoury and al dente squid ink spaghettini.

4th course: Second Piatti - Wagyu tenderloin wrapped in baked potato & truffle oil

It's a classic steak and potato dish, but brought to a whole new level by Chef Akira. The juicy tenderloin was neatly wrapped inside this 'crust' of finely grated potato and shaped like egg, then deep fried, the taste of the crispy crust is just like that of rösti. Other than the delicious steak and addictive rosti crust, the brown sauce with truffle oil was truly delectable too.

5th course: Dolce - Lychee Mousse, passionfruit sorbet and fresh fruits.
And with that, was the end of the omakase lunch experience by Chef Akira Watanabe. I always love about AW Kitchen's unique menu, which beautifully combines Japanese delicate flavours and Italian classic cuisine sophisticated Western techniques, as well as the best edible ingredients from both cultures. AW Kitchen is a restaurant, aimed at more established and discerning customers who still can be casual when dining here, but also can appreciate the proper union of two types of cuisine: Japanese & Italian.
