North Jakarta's Hipster Gem: Six Ounces Coffee

Kelapa Gading is undeniably a food haven for literally any types of foodie, especially if you're into street food. It's like an entirely different city! It's only about 14 Km away from where I live, but I hardly venture into the area, unless to visit relatives or, once in a blue moon, to do some errands of visit some travel-worthy restaurants / cafes. Such as this, not-so-new hipster cafe that's becoming a household name in Kelapa Gading area, for the good coffee and equally solid food to boot, Six Ounces Coffee.

Six Ounces coffee looks unassuming from the outside, but inside, the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafting in the air and the crowd filling up the tables inside (I've been here a few times at different times of the day and there's always a crowd - can't really blame them, it is cosy here!). At least now that the second story is open for public, there are more spaces to sit at. My favourite spot would be one of the table by the window or the counter lining one side of the room.

1st level area looks like this:

And you'll be welcomed by this rustic homey and clean space.

So first thing you do when you enter is place your order at the cashier at the counter right next to the front door. Your food and drink will be delivered to your table afterwards, but they surprisingly do not charge for service! As a customer, I couldn't be happier to be given the liberty to tip as I will based on my personal assessment on the service that the staff provided. In general, I'm happy with the helpful and attentive floor staff, the cashier, was even more amiable, as she earnestly asked for my feedback on the food and drinks.

Coffee wise, other than espresso based drinks, there's Manual Brewing Bar, handled by their knowledgeable baristas. I didn't try it though, because I came for lunch and boy the sun was mercilessly scorching hot! So I opted for my all-time favourite go-to comfort coffee-based drink: Iced Mocha. For the price of IDR 40,000, it comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and the quantity is really generous, the photo may not show, but it's big!

The other day before visiting Six Ounces, I saw some photos posted by some of my foodie friends, of pastas and a few other drool-worthy food at Six Ounces. So I naturally scanned the menu for those, but to my disappointment, those special menus are only available by prior reservation! Yes, people, nowadays, it's not only movie tickets that you should book in advance, special food at Six Ounces too! *eyes rolling. But anyhoo, I picked Truffle Fries and the only Asian dish on the Lunch menu. I couldn't be happier with my choices!

Love the thinly sliced beef!
It's a lovely cafe, hipster enough for my standard, with good coffee and more than enough choices of food than most specialty coffee places in the area. Besides that, the ample and cosy 2 story seating areas mean that you're more likely to get a seat in here. I also learned that on weekends, guests can have brunch from the next door neighbour, The Green Door Kitchen. I have yet tried having brunch here, but looking at the photos on their Instagram, the food looks pretty solid and could be your option this coming weekend.

The only setback I can think of is possibly the highly competitive parking space and the requirement to book some 'special' food in advance. I'll try my luck with the special food next time, anyone care to recommend what I should order?
