Dining with a VIEW at Fairmont Jakarta

It feels good to be back in my hometown, Jakarta...What better way to celebrate my homecoming than over some fine degustation dinner? Not just any restaurant could pull off a proper degustation course which leaves a lingering taste that made me craving for more. One of the places I'd highly recommend in Jakarta, would be VIEW Restaurant & Bar at Fairmont Hotel Jakarta.

Back in 2016, I had the pleasure to have a degustation dinner on the Christmas Eve, I've blogged about it here. A few years later, VIEW's headed by a different chef and the menu has changed drastically than what I remembered. Chef de Cuisine Hans Christian has certainly upped the game and transformed VIEW into a proper modern European restaurant & bar that won Jakarta's Best European Restaurant award on NOW! Jakarta's Best Restaurant, Bar & Cafe Awards 2017.

VIEW's interior, captured at dinner time

A young and ambitious Indonesian, Chef Hans Christian has an impressive culinary background for someone his age, including working as the Chef de Partie at Next Restaurant, Alinea Group, under Chefs Grant Achatz and Jenner Tomaska back in his days in the United States. Now that he's back to his home country, Chef Hans seems to have the world at his feet.

The menu at VIEW is modern european with Asian influence. Guests could choose the 4, 6 or 8 course tasting menu or a la carte. But I think the tasting menu is very reasonably priced, considering the quality, taste & preparation that went into making them.

Here's a brief sneak peek of the items that you could order when dining at VIEW.

I'd like to tip my hat to Chef Hans for bringing such world class flavour & dishes to diners in Jakarta. Honestly I enjoyed each dishes that we had, but if I really must choose, my top pick would be the Burnt Caesar entree. The dish might seem simple, but I really love the burnt aroma & taste of the cheese on romaine lettuce & kale. I would love to come back to experience Chef Hans' menu for the next season.

Looking retrospectively & comparing the fine dining scenes in Sydney versus Jakarta or Bali, I have to say I've had more memorable experiences in Indonesia and the prices in Indonesia is more affordable! It seems like the chefs are more daring to experiment & express their creativity in Asia and these experiments work really well. Hope that I've convinced you to come & treat yourself to a fancy dinner here while in Jakarta. It's absolutely worth it!
