Keraton at The Plaza is a Luxury Collection hotel, which is run by the world renowned Starwood group (the group that helms international chain of hotels such as Le Meridien, Westin, St. Regis, Sheraton, etc). A few months ago, Bengawan restaurant (one of the 2 F&B outlets that Keraton has, the other being Keraton Lounge), underwent a rather major change. Despite its Indonesian name, Bengawan has recently changed its focus towards Mexican cuisine. Did you hear me right? Yes, I really said Mexican.

The major change was not without a strong icon to support. Chef Lamberto Valdez, currently the Director of Culinary at Keraton The Plaza, a true blue Mexican who possesses not less than 25 years of experience internationally at various kitchens. His personal encounters includes managing the F&B at various major hospitality properties, Michelin starred restaurants and even running his own upscale restaurant. I'm pretty sure it is quite challenging for the team at Bengawan to adjust to the change, but they are certainly doing it pretty well.
A few weeks ago, I went to Bengawan (for the first time) for a dinner with friends. Here's what some part of the entire restaurant look like:
During the Ramadhan month, Bengawan offered the Iftar buffet dinner (normally, Bengawan does not do buffet for dinner, fyi). the buffet featured Arabic, Mexican and Indonesian cuisines, as well as other international buffet spread, breads, cheeses, dessert, etc. The Iftar buffet was priced at IDR 350.000++ per person.

Left: Shawarma Right: Burritos |
Cheese spread |
Left: Sweet Ta'jil (Kue Lapis, dates & sweet tea) Right: One of the dessert displayed at the buffet spread |
As usual, what I do when eating at buffet restaurants, is to firstly scour the entire ground and spot what to grab later. Definitely, you are not to miss the Mexican station, where you can ask for burritos, enchiladas, tortillas, quesadillas, etc, all made with unbelievably delicious and tender Chicken or Beef Tinga (shredded meat). The Guacamole, made with imported avocado is a must-try!

After Iftar Buffet, Bengawan is back to its normal business, serving buffet breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch (available with option of free flow alcohol and without). The buffet selection at Keraton is relatively extensive, covering dishes from
So, the next time you feel like having some Mexican feast, try heading up to Bengawan and say hello to Chef Valdez for me please! :)
