Chez Gado Gado, Seminyak

Chez Gado Gado, one of Bali's top and longest standing casual fine dining establishments in Bali (it's even older than me!), apparently is one of the properties owned by the owner of Double Six Luxury Hotel in Seminyak, and it is actually located within a 5 minutes buggy ride from the hotel. I had long wanted to try Gado Gado, and finally the chance and occasion arrived (thankfully). Now, how could you say no to a gorgeous place like this:

Gado Gado is situated at the furthest end of Jalan Dhyana Pura, in the bustling and classy part of Bali, Seminyak.  As you walk up the stairs leading up to the restaurant from the pavement, you'll be greeted by this sign:

Welcome to Chez Gado Gado!

You have seen prettiest angle of the outdoor seating (see photo above). I wish I could show you more of the lovely outdoor area, but it was quite dark and I didn't want to disturb the privacy of the guests who were still dining there. But anyway, here are a few shots of the indoor area:

Menu

Chez Gado-Gado opens daily for Breakfast Lunch and Dinner, so its Pan-Mediterranean menu is divided into those 3 timings:
- Breakfast is a pretty standard western affair, a la carte, no set menu
- Lunch, other than the a la carte, you can opt for the (super good deal) Lunch Set Menu, priced IDR 175,000++ for Starter, Main Course & Dessert.
- Dinner, again, other than the a la carte, there are set menus, they are the Sunset Bites Set Menu (from 5 - 7 PM, 4 course set menu for IDR 300,000 or IDR 450,000 with wine pairing), Signature Set Menu (Appetizers to Dessert for IDR 450,000) and Vegetarian Set Menu (IDR 350,000 for 5 course)

Too bad that we came after sunset, and the sky was already pitch black then. But we still chose to sit at the outdoor table nonetheless, as we wanted to enjoy the late beach breeze. It was quite humid and hot, at the time of my visit, thankfully, a glass of chilled Rosé wine came to our rescue!

(cold starter) Swordfish Carpaccio - thinly sliced swordfish with creamy pomelo dressing and basil oil.
That was my very first time eating swordfish, yup, the gigantic fish with a sword like 'bill', and what's better, the thinly sliced pinkish white flesh was served raw, as carpaccio! Despite my own reservations about eating unfamiliar meat, I didn't regret it at all. It tasted really well in fact, love the juicy & rather sweet fish carpaccio, with the refreshing pomelo dressing and fresh greens on top.

Essence of Tomato (available for limited time only)
This soup is light, with clear and spiced broth, with boiled tomatoes and seafood. I'd say it reminded me of a mild version of tom yum, but it's not quite so either...well anyway, why not try it for yourself? =)

(Main Course) Lamb 3 Ways - pan-seared filet, shoulder and shank served with pommes 'paolo', zucchini, white bean puree, tomato, pesto and thyme jus. This dish is simply incredible, all three parts of the lamb, though in its raw state they have different fat contents and fiber textures, but they turn out incredibly smooth and tender on the plate.

Gado Gado Black Forest - chocolate brownie, mousse, marinated cherries and berry sorbet.
This is Gado Gado's interpretation of deconstructed Black Forest cake, all the classic elements of the cake are there, but scattered across the round plate.

Mandarin & Orange - mousse made from Kintamani orange, frozen yoghurt and marinated orange. The mousse and the frozen yoghurt are quite boldly sour. So if you're not into overly sweet stuff, this could be a good dessert choice.

Classic Chocolate Melted Cake served with vanilla ice cream and passion fruit. Absolutely well done, can you see the sleek molten darkness engulfing the chocolate sake dome?

I'm sorry for the (unusually) poor quality of the photos I took above...I'm actually quite amazed that I still managed to capture these photos at Chez Gado Gado, if at all. Especially as we were sitting outdoor, where the nearest available light source were from the candle on our table, the hanging decoration lamps and the moon! As romantic as it got, that was the least ideal situation for taking nice photos *sigh. Nonetheless, our meal here was delightful. Price wise, they are not cheap, but these are worth it, in my opinion (especially the set menus), as opposed to other fancy restaurants in the area. I think it is most ideal to come here to catch the sunset, as the lounge chairs are directly facing the endless expanse thats is Double Six Beach and Indian Ocean.
