Foodies in Jakarta would have been to or at least have heard of the Wilshire restaurant at Foundry 8, in Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD). But have you heard that it has only recently moved to a new location?
The new place still looks and feels a lot like its old space, with dark colours dominant, bronze colour in its interior elements. It definitely looks much better than its previous tenant, which I suspect, had to close down because of not so good business. Nowadays, with so many tough existing competition and strong contending newcomers, unless you can offer something truly different or novel, it would be hard to survive.
I went to Wilshire last week, not only to take a look at its brand new location, but also to try the menus offered for Eat Jakarta or #EatJkt, which is a month-long eating 'celebration' in Jakarta, whereby the 100 participating restaurants would offer special set menus at special price. In short, it's Jakarta's version of 'Restaurant Week', such is its name in the United States and even in Singapore.
So, what are the special Set Menus that Wilshire offer for Eat Jakarta month? Let's have a look...
Sesame Chicken Salad - Arugula Tossed With Sesame Dressing, With Cherry Tomatoes, And Crispy Wonton IDR 95,000 (a la carte) |
Garlic Noodles with Tiger Prawn - Garlic Butter Sauce & Pan Fried Tiger Prawn IDR 135,000 (a la carte) |
Menu 1: IDR 215,000 net / pax
- Sesame Chicken Salad
- Garlic Noodles with Prawns OR Squid Ink Fried Rice
- Earl Grey Creme Brulee
Menu 2: IDR 349,000 net / pax
- Sesame Chicken Salad
- Slow Cooked 55 Degree Wagyu Beef in hot stone
- Earl Grey Creme Brulee
Slow Cooked 55 Degree Wagyu Bowl in Hot stone |
The above looks absolutely legit, don't they? I indicated the a la carte price of the dishes above, just as a comparison so you know how much they would normally. Each of the dishes come in normal serving size, so the 3 course menu per person is definitely going to fill you up to the brim, well at least it did for me. Both menus have the same salad for starter and the same dessert, so the only reason I picked Menu 2, was because I wanted to try the Slow Cooked Wagyu with sous-vide egg. The salad alone, was already quite filling, then came the main course in a hotstone bowl, which had in it: a thick slab of wagyu beef, slow cooked and topped with sous vide egg and corn. The wagyu was quite soft and juicy, but I actually had expected it to be much more tender, I suppose the thickness of the cut has some part to play in its rather tough (for my standard) texture. Now, the earl grey creme brulee was quite fine, except for the rather thick caramel layer, the ones we had were quite thick, it almost felt like breaking a glass...lol, maybe we're unlucky that day...
Left: Eat Jkt Set Menu Right: Garlic Udon with Tiger prawn IDR 125,000 |
Other than that, Wilshire also has some new menus up its sleeves. I think Wilshire's menu is the kind of sleek, modern, sophisticated dishes, oh there are plenty of fusions inspired by some favourite local dishes alright, but they're twisted and repackaged as 'Wilshire'. For example the Urban Eggs Burrito, a rather interesting Mexican-Indonesian twist: tortilla wrap with Indonesian wok-fried vegetables filling, that tasted just like the 'Tek Tek' cousin. Sort of hipster, but the posh kind of hipster.
Pan-fried Duck Confit with Waffle, served with maple syrup and sunny side up egg IDR 139,000 |
Left: Grilled Beef Tongue, with sous vide egg 155,000 Right: Urban Rice - an Adaptation To The Legendary Street Food, Nasi Gila IDR 45,000 |
