Jakarta is recently being swept by healthy fever lately, which is a good trend of course! Starting with the weekly Car Free Day, always flooded by a sea of humans, all eager to stroll / jog / run on the car free streets (although unfortunately, there are still some inconsiderate people who smoke rampantly) and lately, there are more places offering health-conscious menus, like this new healthy bar at SCBD.
Berrywell is situated just a stone's throw away from the other healthy cafe which I shared not too long ago (Beets & Bouts). The bar is quite small compared to its neighbour. At the far end of the place, just ahead from the door, is a self-service water and dessert counter. The infused water is complimentary, but the gluten free cakes are not.
What I like about the place is that it opens early, 7 am, daily. So, I came here with a dear friend of mine, to have breakfast date at around 9.30am. The simple menu consists of smoothie bowls, which could come in regular or large bowl, smoothies, cold-pressed juice, wraps and burgers, cakes, tea and coffee. Not too complicated to choose, unless you're like me (who wants to try everything).
So each of us had the Dragon Bowl-Z (dragon fruit, banana, raspberry, mango, coconut water) and Pina Colada (banana, peach, pineapple, coconut shavings, multigrain milk) smoothie bowls. I like the yellow Pina Colada better, as it's not as sour and creamier as Dragon Bowl-Z. Price wise, I have no complaints at all, because it's roughly the average price of similar products sold in the market lately, but I'm glad that they offer smaller (which means cheaper) servings. I could happily have the Regular bowl and then move on to another place for an actual, heavier meal =D
With such happy and healthy products, my only complain actually arises from the service. Somehow that morning of our visit, both of the crews on duty had poker faces (I won't so much say as angry, but they were not exactly hospitable, even when talking face to face, taking our orders). And it wasn't just me, my friend noticed the same thing. It was so unlike the experience I had at Beets & Bouts, when I actually met the owners and they were very welcoming, even talked to us at our tables and gushed passionately about healthy lifestyle and such. Well, maybe the crews were simply having a bad morning at the time of our visit (having to work and make breakfast for early-riser, health-schmucks like me instead of sleeping in). Oh, at least we heard "Thank you" on our way out...
