Are you a self-proclaimed fanatic of these healthy green buttery fruits? Well you're in for a treat, because for a limited time only, the folks at Australian Avocados are running this brilliant pop up cafe in Surry Hills. And you need not guess: everything on the menu contains avocados (except for the coffee - actually these two make delicious iced beverage!).
I've always liked avocado since I was a kid. But the ones I found back home were often bitter, were never ripen properly or had this unpleasant sandy texture (I know, weird). So, as much as I'd love to spend on them avos, I have to refrain myself because unfortunately, I had too many bad encounters. But ever since coming to Australia, I discovered the true delight in enjoying properly ripe avos, smashed, sliced, pureed, spread, toasted, fried with almost anything and they're always delicious! So like most Aussies, I am obsessed for this buttery green fruit, whose price fluctuates with the season. There was one time when I could get them avos at 3 for $5, but most of the year the price is around $2.50 each.
Now, back to the pop-up cafe, its location is quite central in Surry Hills' trendy suburb in Sydney, just on the bustling Crown Street strech. For a pop-up venue, the decor's quite serious and does not show any signs that it's only for temporary. There's a lounge to the right of the cafe, if you're there just for quick bites or even just for coffee. Or simply head to the right side and settle at one of the tables (next to the window is always best!).
"Let's Avo Cuddle" - too cute!!! |
Having spent more than a year in Sydney brings me to a realization that there aren't that many cafes here offering interesting menus as they do in Melbourne. Most of the time, there's the boring classic avo smash on toast, eggs benny, smoothies bowl, etc...Basically they're ordinary and I often feel cheated to pay for something that I can make myself at home. So what makes Good Fat interesting is not only the menu has avocado from Drinks, to Entree, Mains & Dessert. Keep scrolling down for menu.
Without further ado, have a look at what I tried on my visit and see they tantalize you enough ;)
Large Coffee AUD 4.40 |
ABC Bites - golden crumbed fried avocado balls, bacon, tender chicken thigh, potato, mozzarella, served with sriracha aioli AUD 12 |
Steak BĂ©arnie Avo Style - seared beef eye fillet with an avocado & tarragon salsa AUD 20 |
Look at that juicy cross section! |
Avo and steak, who would've thought they'd work together? |
The Avo-licious Pig - Sweet miso & wasabi glazed pork cutlet with finely chopped avocado, mango, red onion, coriander salsa AUD 20 |
Avoconetto - avocado ice cream, shaved dark chocolate, sweet pumpkin shortbread cream, praline & salted caramel drizzle, served in waffle cone AUD 8 |
I can't pick my favourite from the above, because each of them were great in different ways. I love how the ABC Bites are SO addictive, on its own and even more so with the mildly spicy sriracha mayo. The beef eye fillet steak was yummy too, but somehow, the pork cutlet stole the show with the refreshing combo of avo-mango salsa. And lastly, the dessert, I was surprised to see the price (it's SO affordable for Sydney standard) and the generous serving - fact: it was enough to share for 2 people. If I had more space in my tummy, I'd order second helping of the Avoconneto.
Verdict: YES, I absolutely recommend this cafe! Not only for the A-Z avocados concept, the well executed and delicious dishes, friendly team and very decent price for the quality and quantity, it's also running for a limited time only. I wish they'd consider running a permanent establishment, whoever knows?
