New: Goedkoop Kebon Jeruk

The Dutch are not as well know for their 'koffie'-drinking culture, as much as their Italian counterparts do. So, what can you expect when entering a Dutch coffee shop or in Indonesian 'Warung Kopi Belanda' (sorry to spoil the curiosity, they don't sell 'pots' here).

One of my favourite coffee shops in Jakarta finally opens its first branch in West Jakarta. Since Central & South Jakarta has become almost saturated with new and existing gourmet coffee shops, and North Jakarta's recent surge with some new gourmet coffee shops to be reckoned with, while East Jakarta is still figuring out if it's actually part of Jakarta or not; the West seems to the safest and surest gamble for business expansion. To prove my point: Crematology 2.0 came from Senopati to open in Puri earlier this year, and now, Goedkoop from Bendungan Hilir (Benhil) also decided to expand west-wards.

Goedkoop Kebon Jeruk is not as large at the one in Benhil, but the parking space is certainly much more accommodating, this is one of the perks of being located in the same complex as a supermarket, unlike the one at Benhil, where parking is an issue. Also, unlike the cafe at Benhil, smoking customers are only allowed to do so at the tables outdoor, much to my relief.

But the tables indoor are numbered anyway, and it's not as spacious or as antique as the Benhil cafe. At the moment, the cafe is quite spartan, with a few little things here and there to remind guests of their store in Benhil, like the antique chairs and the Dutch traditional 'shoe'.

Staying true to its name, Goedkoop, in Dutch, which means affordable, inexpensive, cheap; the prices are absolutely affordable, with a cup of espresso fetching a wallet-friendly IDR 15,000 and the most expensive warm drink, Kopi Luwak at IDR 47,000. Food wise, I am quite pleased to find its menu still serves the complete range of food from Breakast Pannekoek, Patate, Toastje, to Main Course like Goedkoop Burger, Spaghetti and Fried Rice, all within reasonable range of IDR 10,000 - 48,000.

I may not come here often, simple because Benhil is closer to my home than Kebon Jeruk, but Goedkoop will always be one of my go-to place for a cuppa good and affordable joe. Residents in the West, congratulations, now you can enjoy what Southerners do without traveling for miles! =)
